Academic Background

Dr. Ron Pelton completed a Fellowship in Oculofacial Plastic Surgery at the University of Utah, following a Residency in Ophthalmology at Baylor College of Medicine, where he served as Chief Resident. He earned his MD from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, and his PhD in Cell Biology from the same institution. As a Fulbright Scholar in Graz, Austria, Dr. Pelton studied Medical Biochemistry. His undergraduate degree is from from Hendrix College where he obtained a BA in Chemistry with honors.

Achievements

Dr. Pelton has been honored with several awards throughout his career in ophthalmology. As a senior resident, he earned first place in the American College of Eye Surgeons Resident National Video Tape Competition in cataract surgery. He also won a Storz RSVP Resident Program Instrument Design Contest Award. Dr. Pelton has been a recipient of the esteemed Heed Fellowship in Ophthalmology and the AOS-Knapp Ophthalmology Fellowships as a fellow in Ophthalmic Plastic surgery and was nominated for the ASOPRS Thesis Award. In addition, Dr. Pelton was selected for the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) Leadership Development Program IX, Class of 2009. His leadership and contributions to the field have been acknowledged with several AAO honors, including the Achievement Award, Special Recognition Award, Secretariat Award, and Senior Achievement Award. Furthermore, he has been recognized by the El Paso County Medical Society with the Humanitarian Award for his commitment to enhancing healthcare within his community and abroad.  

Dr. Pelton has held numerous leadership and advisory roles in the field of ophthalmology including serving on the Board of Trustees for the American Academy of Ophthalmology.  He has also served on numerous committees for the AAO. Dr. Pelton has twice served as President of the Colorado Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons and has served as an American Board of Ophthalmology Oral Board Examiner since 2006.  Dr Pelton is member of the OMIC Board and committees since 2011 and in 2020, he assumed the role of Treasurer on OMIC’s Executive Committee. 

Dr. Pelton takes special pride in his work in developing countries with his work with ORBIS International and the Hawaiian Eye Foundation.  Through these non-profits, Dr. Pelton has worked in countries such Zambia, Mongolia, Vietnam, Indonesia, The Philippines and Myanmar performing and teaching Oculofacial Plastic surgery to local surgeons.
